Here it is the first week in January. I finished this bull painting. I remembered when I talked about him before that I didn’t know what I was going to do with the foreground, but somehow, I let the bull dictate the outcome. I am pleased that I just put a suggestion of grass around him, which seems to add a bit of bling to this Colorado Longhorn.
I had planned on starting this longhorn bull painting, but as you can see, I am painting him out. The size of the canvas simply doesn’t lend itself to this bull. So, it’s taking quite a lot of paint to cover my block-in so I can put something else on this canvas, most likely a longhorn, but I haven’t determined which one yet.
Now, I am finally getting around to telling you what my next paintings are going to be. As you can see, I have blocked in the background of grays and browns on this square canvas. I friend sent me this photo of this cute little terrier. I love all the textures in the cement block wall and concrete floor painted brown. I plan on painting more detail of the background before I start anything on the terrier. This little dog is in the tack room where western gear is kept. As you can see from the photo, the dog is lying down between two western saddles, with only the stirrups showing on both sides.
This next canvas I have laid the groundwork for with a galvanized water tank, there will be a longhorn with head hanging over the edge, and a bit of shadow in the water. There will be a longhorn off to this longhorn’s right or the viewers left, but back aways, so as not to interfere with my concentration on the main focus, the tank and the longhorn. I’m not sure if there will be another longhorn to the viewer’s right. I think when I am near completion of the painting I’ll make that decision.
