Reminiscences: New Mexico Galleries

Writer's picture: Kathy Winkler StudioKathy Winkler Studio

While we were at the Air Force Academy, we made several trips to Houston through Austin to visit relatives in both locations, and also visited friends in Albuquerque. Our visits to Albuquerque also included visits to Santa Fe and Taos where we were able to visit many more galleries and experience new artists and their works. The artwork in New Mexico itself was very different from that we experienced in Austin, Texas.

For the most part, the artwork we liked was about the scenery of New Mexico – magnificent billowing clouds, canyons and plateaus, artwork about Southwest Indians and Indian villages, Indian pottery and drums, and turquoise, silver and squash-blossom jewelry.
